This week we installed some new software called , ‘Pro Connect’. When connected to the iPads or laptops, teachers can set maths activities, challenges and quizzes for the children to contribute to online. All the scores and results pop up on the interactive TV at the front of the class for all to see!
One of our SPaG objectives is to find synonyms for the word ‘said’. Check out how many we came up with using the ProConnect software.
What an amazing day! Year 5 have had an excellent time climbing the high rope obstacle courses in the trees, taking the gladiator challenge, building dens in the woods and playing on the adventure play area.
There were some reluctant bodies at first but everyone had a go, faced their fears and even had an extra trip round the 40ft high ropes!
The outstanding behaviour and the quality of the childrens’ manners made the whole school trip a pleasure for the staff involved. It was a joy to see so many children proud of their achievements, and each other’s. It’s fair to say we worked as a team to help, encourage and support one another – objective achieved!
Well done year 5, you should sleep well tonight. 🙂
Gladiator Challenge-Race to The Top!
Over the last 4 weeks, year 5 have been emersed in a range of rainforest based stories and encountered a host of new, exciting vocabulary. Through our SPaG work we have been playing around with sentence structures and used a variety of language features with our new vocabulary to create engaging descriptions. We have mostly been focusing on using simile starters, fronted adverbial and relative clauses.
Based on our class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, each child has written their own adventure story with a descriptive opening, a tense build up, a dramatic dilemma and a clever resolution and ending!
You can read some of our stories by clicking on the thumbnails below …
Following the study of Andy Goldsworthy’s famous sculptures, we have been creating our own nature inspired pictures. With a wealth of autumn leaves, in pairs and small groups we have made a range of wildlife animals. See if you can tell what they are…
Blackburn Rovers have been in to year 5 once again this week, helping us understand the benefits of health and nutrition. Exercise is very important, however there are other factors to consider when trying to keep our bodies in tip top condition!
After an hour of striking and fielding games such as cricket and handball, Chris and Adam from the Blackburn Rovers Education Department have also been explaining how our skeleton protects our organs and muscles. This week we played a fun matching game and learnt many facts about our bodies that we never knew! We can’t wait for next week’s session.
Check out our finished rainforest pictures, inspired by the French artist Henri Rousseau. Everyone has worked hard today to complete their pieces of art, which are now proudly displayed in the hall. Continue reading
This week in our Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar lessons we are focusing on relative clauses. Having built a range of sentences based on our class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom, we added drop in clauses for extra information and talked about the relative pronouns used. Each group of children were able to complete the complex sentences correctly and identify the main and subordinated clauses in each one.
The Year 5 classroom was buzzing with excitement this afternoon as the TTRockstars app was introduced. Each pupil made their own avatar and began practising their times tables in the studio before playing at a range of festivals and competing with each other to be ‘top of the charts’.
Each time a student completes a studio session or wins a rock battle they earn money to spend in the ‘Rock Shop’. Rainbow unicorn hair, bright pink sparkly guitars and a range of fabulous sunglasses are on offer…so what are you waiting for? Get rocking!
This week saw the start of our Move & Learn project with Blackburn Rovers. We spent this afternoon talking about the benefits of exercise on our bodies and the effect it has on our heart and pulse rates.
We warmed up and played a few games with Chris our teacher before taking home some information on nutrition and making healthy life choices.
Everyone had a great time and are now looking forward to next Thursday!
Over the last few weeks we have been securing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to and beyond 1,000,000!
We can successfully read and write these large numbers as well as understand what happens when we add and subtract powers of ten to them.
