Blackburn Rovers have been in to year 5 once again this week, helping us understand the benefits of health and nutrition. Exercise is very important, however there are other factors to consider when trying to keep our bodies in tip top condition!
After an hour of striking and fielding games such as cricket and handball, Chris and Adam from the Blackburn Rovers Education Department have also been explaining how our skeleton protects our organs and muscles. This week we played a fun matching game and learnt many facts about our bodies that we never knew! We can’t wait for next week’s session.
Check out our finished rainforest pictures, inspired by the French artist Henri Rousseau. Everyone has worked hard today to complete their pieces of art, which are now proudly displayed in the hall. Continue reading
This week in our Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar lessons we are focusing on relative clauses. Having built a range of sentences based on our class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom, we added drop in clauses for extra information and talked about the relative pronouns used. Each group of children were able to complete the complex sentences correctly and identify the main and subordinated clauses in each one.
The Year 5 classroom was buzzing with excitement this afternoon as the TTRockstars app was introduced. Each pupil made their own avatar and began practising their times tables in the studio before playing at a range of festivals and competing with each other to be ‘top of the charts’.
Each time a student completes a studio session or wins a rock battle they earn money to spend in the ‘Rock Shop’. Rainbow unicorn hair, bright pink sparkly guitars and a range of fabulous sunglasses are on offer…so what are you waiting for? Get rocking!
This week saw the start of our Move & Learn project with Blackburn Rovers. We spent this afternoon talking about the benefits of exercise on our bodies and the effect it has on our heart and pulse rates.
We warmed up and played a few games with Chris our teacher before taking home some information on nutrition and making healthy life choices.
Everyone had a great time and are now looking forward to next Thursday!
Over the last few weeks we have been securing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to and beyond 1,000,000!
We can successfully read and write these large numbers as well as understand what happens when we add and subtract powers of ten to them.
Year 5 have started their gymnastics scheme of work this week. There are some very enthusiastic children in class who are working creatively to produce some interesting sequences already! Linked with our rainforest topic, we took on the role of different animals and travelled across pieces of apparatus with them in mind.
Today we have been studying the French 19th century artist, Henri Rousseau. He used a range of green shades to create rainforest style paintings which also featured bright coloured animals. Our aim is to create a piece of art work in his style but first we are developing our colour mixing skills.
We have used green, black and white paint to produce over 16 shades of green in our sketch pads this afternoon.
Well, here we are! The new year 5 class at Westwood got off to a great start today. Great behaviour, manners and a hard working attitude from every member of the class means that we are setting ourselves up for a good year ahead. Tonight the children have taken home a letter explaining the rules and routines for PE, homework and spellings as well as some information about our new topics.
Watch this space to see how we are getting on in year 5!
