Maths – Place Value

Over the last few weeks we have been securing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to and beyond 1,000,000!

We can successfully read and write these large numbers as well as understand what happens when we add and subtract powers of ten to them.

Gymnastics

Year 5 have started their gymnastics scheme of work this week. There are some very enthusiastic children in class who are working creatively to produce some interesting sequences already! Linked with our rainforest topic, we took on the role of different animals and travelled across pieces of apparatus with them in mind.

Henri Rousseau

Today we have been studying the French 19th century artist, Henri Rousseau. He used a range of green shades to create rainforest style paintings which also featured bright coloured animals. Our aim is to create a piece of art work in his style but first we are developing our colour mixing skills.

We have used green, black and white paint to produce over 16 shades of green in our sketch pads this afternoon.

Welcome to Year 5!

Well, here we are! The new year 5 class at Westwood got off to a great start today. Great behaviour, manners and a hard working attitude from every member of the class means that we are setting ourselves up for a good year ahead. Tonight the children have taken home a letter explaining the rules and routines for PE, homework and spellings as well as some information about our new topics.

Watch this space to see how we are getting on in year 5!

A Tearful Farewell!

Our children said a fond farewell to the Chinese visitors this afternoon after wowing us with their talents! The farewell assembly resulted in hugs and tears a-plenty! What a fabulous experience for Westwood Primary School. We have made memories this week that will stay with us for a very long time. Huge thanks to our host families – without you, this would not have been possible. Thank you for all your efforts, they have been much appreciated by us, the children and most of all, the Chinese parents! Have a great weekend. čÖé

Goodbye Disco!

Tonight the parents all pulled together to create a fabulous buffet and party for our children! We had an abundance of food and dancing as we all enjoyed our last night together. Thank you to everyone who made it such a  special night. We looked through the photographs taken throughout the week from each family. What a lot of memories we have made!

Tramp2Lean!

As part of our after school activity plan, the Chinese students and their host families enjoyed a trip to a local trampoline centre! Everyone had a fabulous time, as you can see from some the red faces in these pictures…
